Sports Village: Marcliffe event raises thousands

Hundreds of guests attended a dinner at the Marcliffe Hotel and Spa last Tuesday, raising thousands of pounds for a new Banchory sports centre.

270 guests attended the event at the five-star luxury hotel, bringing in a total of £80,000 for the Banchory Sports Village project.

A raffle and two auctions helped contribute to the total as locals enjoyed the glitz and glamour on the evening of November 4.

Banchory Sports Village fundraising chair James Knowles told Deeside Today: “It never fails to amaze me the amount of money that’s contributed at these kind of events throughout the north-east.

“We had tremendous contribution from those in the room, and the end result was over £80,000 on the evening.

“That leaves us able to say that [so far] we have in fact reached £400,000, so we’re sixty per cent of the way there, which is really quite a ‘wow’.”

Mountain runner Robbie Simpson, who is from Banchory, handled some (thankfully easier) questions from guests.

Sports personalities backing the project, including Aberdeen footballer Andrew Considine and mountain runner Robbie Simpson, took to the stage to answer quick-fire questions from attendees.

Work on the £7.8 million Sports Village project will get underway in September of next year, providing that £700,000 can be raised by then in the community.

£320,000 had already been donated by local businesspeople to go towards that total.

Mr Knowles added: “As more and more people get on board, the awareness is expanding and we don't think there’s any doubt we’re going to reach this target.”

The venue is due to finally open in 2017.
