Sport: Fourth win in a row for Banchory

The teams gave a "red card" to racism before the game.
Striker Jack Henderson set up all three goals as a lively Banchory team overcame Deveronside in their Milton Park encounter on Saturday.

Fraser Mackie opened the scoring for the Saints shortly after the half-time interval with a placed shot from close range.

But the lead lasted only seven minutes as a needless foul gave the Banff side a free header just yards from the goal.

With fifteen minutes to go, Henderson found Ben McGregor in the area to reinstate the lead, which was doubled by substitute Ryan Whelan four minutes later.

After a nervy opening to the game, a spilled cross allowed St. Ternan’s Stuart Rogie a tentative shot from outside the area. The Saints’ pressure earned them a free kick which was blocked on the six yard line.

There were two shouts for penalties midway through the half - right-back Will Rowett’s run into the box was halted abruptly, and a Deveronside defender was accused of handball, but neither were given.

Banchory’s pressure was relentless, with several attempts on goal through the half, though the visiting goalkeeper was rarely tested.

Home keeper Kevin Stewart was called to action after a poor Banchory throw-in led to a shot from the ’Side.

After the break, Jack Henderson forced a corner after his effort was pushed over the bar.

Soon enough, Saints’ pressure came to a head, as Henderson passed two defenders on the way to squaring to a well-placed Fraser Mackie for the opening goal of the game.

Shortly after Danny Casey forced a good save from the visitors, a Deveronside free kick floated in from the left and found an unmarked black-and-white shirt to level the scores on 61 minutes.

Rowett took the goalkeeper by surprise with a wayward cross, but the keeper corrected his mistake before Mackie could push the ball across the line.

Not long after sending a shot off-target, Henderson pulled the ball back for Ben McGregor to drive the ball low into the goal to restore the home lead.

Left-back Mike Clayton’s 81st-minute free kick found Henderson, who again took the ball past two before landing his third assist of the afternoon - his pass back found substitute Ryan Whelan who put the game beyond doubt.

Grant Christie came on late in the game, and with a chip threatened to make it four but his effort floated over the bar.

The win sees the Saints remain in sixth place in the Superleague table. They next travel to Spain Park in Ferryhill, Aberdeen, where they’ll take on fourth-place Banks O’ Dee.
