Banchory businesses up for top tourism awards

Buchanans Bistro, at Woodend Barn in Banchory, is up for “Best Informal Eating Experience”.
Three Banchory businesses have been announced as finalists in the 2015 Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Awards.

The Awards, organised yearly by the Aberdeen City and Shire Hotels’ Association, recognise hotels, eateries, distilleries and attractions across the north-east.

Competing for “Best Informal Eating Experience” is Buchanans Bistro of Woodend Barn, who will need to best The Bay Fish and Chips in Stonehaven as well as the Mariner Hotel of Aberdeen.

Val Buchanan, co-owner of the Bistro, told Deeside Today: “We’re very pleased about the nomination. We’re delighted - we don’t normally enter awards so it was very good to be shortlisted.

“We’ve been running a successful, vibrant, local bistro in Banchory for five years, and an outside catering business prior to that, so we’ve had quite a clear message about local food sourcing and supporting local businesses.”

Tor-na-Coille Hotel, on Inchmarlo Road, is shortlisted for “Most Hospitable Hotel” and will battle it out with this year’s victor Meldrum House Country Hotel in Oldmeldrum.

Banchory Lodge Hotel, located on the River Dee, will vie for “Best Restaurant Experience” with Ardoe House Hotel & Spa and Atlantis Restaurant of Aberdeen.

Banchory Lodge Hotel has also made the shortlist.

Awards chairman Iain Watson said in a press release: “I can honestly say that every single facet of the tourism industry is represented in this awards scheme, from small one-man operators through to large multi-national organisations.

“That is the wonderful thing about the Awards - there is a place for everyone at the table.

“The awards are about recognising operators and individuals who make a real difference to the visitor experience and who are dedicated to ensuring that customers, whether they are here for business or leisure, leave with a first rate impression of what we have to offer.”

The winners will be announced on January 30, 2015, at a ceremony at Ardoe House Hotel.
